Materials and Sustainability
When you invest your own ideas, time, and money to commission work by Redwine Bespoke Furniture, you are making wise use of our natural resources—namely in that you will have something you’re not ever going to want to give away or throw on the curb. Redwine Bespoke selects the best materials for each job, then machines, assembles, and finishes them to provide you with a piece that is exceptionally designed and constructed to last. Properly cared for, the workmanship is guaranteed for the rest of your life.
Trees are my livelihood and I appreciate them, tremendously. I will plant one or more trees on your behalf to replace what we’ve used in your project. Planting can occur on your property, mine, or in one of our National Forests through the efforts of the Arbor Day Foundation.
In some instances, it may be feasible to utilize timber from sick trees that need to be removed from your property, or to reuse lumber from a windblown barn, shed, or rehabilitated building. Together we can bring that tree or old lumber back to life in a new form.
When possible, Redwine Bespoke Furniture sources lumber that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which assures that it has been harvested in a sustainable fashion.
Obtaining wood from local sources, often from Wisconsin, and having a first-hand relationship with my suppliers allows me to tell you where the wood came from, roughly how old it was, and how it was logged.
There are a variety of natural finishes available such as linseed oil, tongue oil, and shellac, as well as beeswax for a final top coat. These hand-rubbed finishes allow the natural warmth of the wood to be seen and felt. While not as durable as lacquers or urethanes, they are easily restored and repaired.
When appropriate, I use high quality processed sheet goods and veneers. In many applications this is the most beautiful and enduring approach to designing and building a piece. A tree goes a lot further when it is made into veneer, and the figuring in the grain is often remarkable when exposed in this way.
